In the first weeks our goals are to get to know the grade 9 students-FIRE leaders-FIRE teacher, establish some expectations and share some resources for being successful in transitioning to Foothill!
Thursday, August 24
SYNOPSIS
FIRE - No travel
Getting to Know Each Other and Bonding Activities of Choice
DETAILS
- Sit together in a common FIRE zone
- Strongly suggest near front white board
- Strongly suggest establishing common tables/desks together (not spread out)
- Put phones and ear buds/headphones away
- Take attendance
- Some options for getting to know each other and bonding
- REMINDER: Not all freshdragons were at orientation nor the teacher
- LINK: Leader Orientation Handbook PDF with directions
- Repeat "Count Off", "Hot Handle", "Name Tag" activities with all students, leaders, and teacher
- NOTE: You can use a tightly rolled piece of paper as the "straw"
- Use the "Questions List" activity with whole group and teacher
- Use the "Life Story" activity ---or--- if already done, you can use different prompts having to do with high school vision or experiences in the future! Some ideas below:
- What is a hope you have for your high school years?
- How do you expect high school to benefit you?
- How will you contribute to a positive high school campus and experience for others?
- Who can you get support from while in high school?
- What is an activity or event in high school that you are looking forward to?
- Rate your first day of high school
- Other options

- Do with everyone's name - each does their own, then can share later
- SIMPLER: Descriptive word or phrase for each letter of first name
- COMPLEX: Attempt to create lines in poem-style
- Interview a Partner (rotate to different people as time allows)
- What is something you like to do for fun or relaxation?
- What is your favorite subject in school?
- What is a song or band you like to listen to?
- Do you have pets? Describe - types, names, personalities.
- Do you play a sport, do a physical activity regularly, participate in a club, play an instrument, like to draw or build?
- What is a movie or show you watched recently that you enjoyed and would recommend?
- Partner drawing
- Blank paper
- Fold it to make four boxes
- Each partner draws in opposite corners to join together to make a single scene or theme or image
- Partner story writing
- Lined paper
- Each partner takes turns adding a sentence to the story
- Back and forth until you have a short story
- Partner poems
- Similar to above but you can use shorter phrases
- You could also choose to use alternating lyrics from a variety of songs you enjoy

- REMINDER: Please emphasize that PICTURE DAY IS MONDAY!!!
- Continue with getting to know you/bonding ideas from Thursday or come up with new activities as a group for Friday...some additional ideas below:
- Kahoot! of choice
- Heads Up (phone app)
- Famous people names stuck on backs/forehead with Post Its or paper/tape then ask questions of others to help you guess who you got assigned
- Sample ideas: comic characters (e.g., Spiderman, Wolverine, Wonder Woman); common movie characters (e.g., Nemo, Lilo or Stitch, Little Mermaid, Iron Man, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Mr. Spock, Princess Leia, Rey, Frodo), singers (e.g., Taylor Swift, Pink, Madonna, Harry Styles), actors, writers, influencers, etc...
- Bring in a puzzle to work on as a group
- Bring in a card or board game (e.g., Uno, Clue, Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders, etc.)
